Grow Your Own Herbal Tea Garden: Chamomile & Coneflower at Home

Herbal tea gardens are having a moment as more people look for low-maintenance plants that double as something they can actually use. Two of the easiest starting points are Roman chamomile and purple coneflower — both classic perennials with a long history as tea ingredients.

Roman Chamomile

Our Roman Chamomile seeds grow into a low, spreading perennial with small daisy-like flowers. It thrives in USDA zones 4-9, tolerates poor soil, and the blooms can be dried and steeped for a classic calming tea.

Purple Coneflower (Echinacea)

A North American prairie native, Purple Coneflower is famous for its large, daisy-like blooms with a distinctive raised center. Beyond its garden presence, echinacea is one of the most widely used herbal tea ingredients for immune support.

Planting Tips

Both plants prefer full sun and well-drained soil, and once established they're genuinely low-maintenance — no babying required. Direct sow in spring after your last frost, and expect first blooms within the first growing season.

Harvesting for Tea

Pick chamomile flowers when fully open and dry them on a screen out of direct sunlight. For coneflower, both petals and cone centers can be dried and used.
